Passing down family stories from generation to generation is an important component of a healthy family life; it’s a cultural practice that gives hope, perspective and an overall greater understanding during a child’s upbringing.
A recent study shows evidence that children raised with a better understanding of their ancestral history possess more self-confidence than those children who are not aware of their family’s past.
But with today’s fast paced society and with stories and conversations being told through Facebook feeds rather than family gatherings around a dinner table, finding the time to share important moments of the past can seem like a daunting task. So how about making it into a fun project that your kids will actually love?
If you want to pass down magical moments for your family’s past, there are several fun and engaging ways to get everyone involved. Here are a few of our favorites your family can try today!
Sharing Family Photos:
It’s a given that children are more apt to accept and be excited about information with colorful pictures are involved. So why not pull out that photo box stuffed way under your bed and share some of those images you’ve kept tucked away for a special time. Old family photos, newspaper clippings, and other graphics are a perfect way to get kids involved in their family history.
Compile a Family Photo Album:
Since those photos already made their way out from under the bed, why not organize them by creating a special family photo album or scrapbook? Get your children involved by letting them pick the paper, colors and other fun accents to highlight family photos.
Family Recipe Book:
Mom’s recipes are hard enough to remember, especially if they’re not written down for memory and safe keeping. Encourage kids to compile their favorite family recipes that can be copied and given to friends and other relatives. This is also a great way to make new memories with your kids in the kitchen!
