Forget about Disney, it’s time to explore the rest of the sunshine state! Check out hidden gems like Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon. Here, you can snorkel, swim, and tube along the Rainbow River, taking in the beautiful sights on shore. After drying off, hike through the paradise-like park, complete with both natural and manmade waterfalls. Rainbow Springs also offers a number of campgrounds so you can stay in paradise all vacation long.

4. Portland, Oregon

Portland isn’t just for the hipsters, it’s also a great place for an active family getaway. First, check out Multnomah Falls where you can take a hike on one of their endless paths leading to their breathtaking waterfalls, then raft along Rogue River. Slide down one of the natural water slides at Opal Creek Hike, or go pick your own fruit at Columbia Farms. The city is great for biking, so rent a few from a local shop and take a tour around the beautiful city to finish off your trip.

5. Alaska

A lesser thought of spot that is fantastic for any family looking for adventure, Alaska boasts countless activities and sights to see. If you have an animal lover in the family, Denali National Park is a must see. Denali is home to North America’s largest mountain, Mt. McKinley, and offers a number of hiking paths where you have the chance to see wolves, black bears, and even sheep! Then, head to Juneau and hike the Mendenhall Glacier. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even go dog sledding on the glacier with the aid of locals.

6. The Outer Banks, North Carolina

A beautiful and historical area located on the coast of North Carolina that will keep your family moving and learning. Start the trip at Fort Macon State Park where you can visit a Civil War site that sits on the Atlantic ocean, then spend the rest of the day playing at the beach. Then, go to the Shackelford Banks, an island home to wild horses. Go for a hike on one of the trails and you might just see one! No trip to this coastal area would be complete without seeing the famous lighthouses; Currituck Lighthouse is a must see. You can climb up to the top, walk along the nearby boardwalk, and take a scenic bike ride along the coast.

7. The Grand Canyon

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon is a adventurer’s dreamland. Stay on the South Rim of the canyon for the most accommodations, or head to the North Rim if you are avid campers/hikers. You can take mule rides into the mouth of the canyon or hike your way down. The one thing you can’t miss is the incredible Skywalk located on the West Rim of the canyon. 8. Yosemite National Park, California

It’s time to get out and explore arguably the best place California has to offer: Yosemite National Park. You can hike through redwood forests then stop off for a picnic along the river. Then, you can go for a swim in the river or even for a fun river rafting tour to take in the scenery. Mix things up a bit and head north to Lake Tahoe, where you can paddle board in the lake or take an aerial tram to High Camp where you can then hike around the area.

9. Austin, TX

Much like Portland, Oregon, Austin is known for their hipsters and food trucks; but don’t let that fool you, this city has plenty of fun to offer. After getting the best breakfast burrito you’ll ever have from a local food truck, walk around Zilker Park where kids can feed ducks, ride a train, and play on a number of playgrounds. You can also head over to Boggy Creek Farm where you can pick your own fruits and veggies while also sneaking in some nutrition education to the kids. To complete the trip, head to the nearby city of San Marcos and go for a float in the San Marcos river; make sure to check out the San Marcos City Park before diving into the beautiful, clear, spring-fed water.

10. Hawaii

This list wouldn’t be complete without one of the most popular and beautiful vacation spots: Hawaii. On the island of Oahu, you can rent a place on the less touristy North Shore where you have numerous beaches and activities at your disposal. Get some surfing lessons, go snorkeling, or even jet ski in the beautiful, clear, water. Ready to dry off? Go for a horseback ride or a hike through the trails of Kaena Point Natural Area Reserve. For something really exciting, go to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you might just see lava pouring into the ocean!

Every history book reminds us of this one concept that seems more like a universal law; every task that we forget to accomplish in our adult lives comes back to haunt us in some form or another as a reminder of this simple, yet seminal, fact.

And yet for some strange reason, for some major or minor flaw in our psyches, with all of the truck we have had with history, all of our past experience with remembering that history can and does in fact repeat itself, right at the beginning of every New Year we revert back to the seemingly well-intentioned process of making New Year resolutions. We resolve to complete a host of conceivably attainable tasks that, for the majority of us, will never manifest during the New Year – or even the next year for that matter. In actuality, our New Year’s resolutions end up morphing into a bucket list of items to be dealt with one day, at some other time.

What’s worse, when these resolutions don’t come to fruition, as they invariably never do, we beat ourselves up with guilt or make excuses, promising to do better the next time around.

To avoid the guilt and annoyance that often comes with realizing that a goal has already been compromised, abandoned altogether or never to be reached for reasons beyond our control, one realistic way of turning our resolutions for the New Year into action items that can actually be realized is to focus those resolutions on strengthening the quality time that we spend with our family and friends! 

This quality time, for example, can take the form of family travel, a pastime that has helped to bond families and friends together since time immemorial.

It sounds easy enough, right? It really does.

However, in this increasingly digital age where technology has made and continues to make it easier and more convenient to communicate – even globally – without even seeing each other face to face in a physical setting anymore, quality time has taken on a different meaning altogether.

And so it would be a wonderful resolution, then, to take a step back every now and then and put in the quality time of live, face-to-face social communication with a friend or loved one who happens to be there right in front of us, not chatting over the internet where we can still see their “virtual” faces, but with that friend or family member right there in front of us, a physical presence as opposed to a virtual one. Family travel will ensure that this quality time is indeed met by all members of the family. 

Yes, there are many road bumps to hinder this type of “old-fashioned” communication; simple and complex issues, such as busy work schedules, single parenting, friends and family in other states and overseas or even children and teenagers in our own homes who seem to never emerge from their rooms or abandon their computers except to eat and sleep, will always be a factor and have been sense before the internet made it so appealing to live virtual lives that are separate from our everyday lives.

Realistically speaking, however, a great resolution for the New Year would be to find the time to communicate with others sans technology, even if it is just for a few minutes a day. And one of the simplest ways to ensure that this resolution of spending more quality time with friends and loved is achieved is to include family travel as a part of your efforts to bond more with both family and friends! A road trip with friends or a short family vacation – a day trip or a weekend getaway – will go a long way in ensuring your quality-time resolutions are met!  

The great thing about travel is that the destination always changes and, with the right people, the journey can be just as great as – and at times better than – the destination itself!

Another benefit to family travel is the fact that your family will be creating unique and invaluable memories while traveling together. Every part of the journey holds the possibility for new adventures as well as finding out more fun facts about friends or loved ones. Also, all of the memories that are made on the trip will remain even after you have returned home and resumed your everyday tasks. You will have these wonderful memories to cherish with friends and loved ones for a lifetime, which is something that hardly manifests itself when making run-of-the-mill New Year resolutions.

The iconic Hotel Del Coronado, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977, stands upon the equally iconic shores of Coronado Island like a lighthouse calling tourists into port. This mainstay of San Diego tourism is a sought after destination for many reasons, one of which is the fact that author L. Frank Baum wrote at least three books from the Oz series while staying at the hotel repeatedly between 1904 and 1910. Additionally, it has been suggested that Baum modeled the fictional Emerald City – where Dorothy travels to meet the Wizard of Oz – from the wonderfully picturesque Hotel Del Coronado.

Having officially opened its doors in 1888, The Del celebrates its 125th birthday this year with a variety of events planned to commemorate this singularly wonderful milestone in the hotel’s remarkable history. One of the most noteworthy events to take place this year was the release of a 208-page history book, Hotel del Coronado History. As a seasoned traveler and dad to 7, I know how stressful it can be to fly with toddlers. Don’t get caught up in the stress this year, follow these tried and true tips for ensuring easy travel with your toddlers this winter and beyond.  

Planning Ahead for Toddlers:

• Buy some books about flying in a plane so that your child will understand the whole concept. You might also buy a toy plane that you can talk about with your toddler. Discuss the people who work on the plane, where you enter the plane, where you sit on a plane, etc. The goal here is to get children used to the idea of flying.
• Get a backpack or special travel bag that is just for the toddler, and beginning a few weeks in advance discuss how the child can help pack their bag.  Talk about what items they’d like to bring with them to play with on the plane.
• Discuss with your child all the steps that come with flying on an airplane, such as: the ride to airport, checking bags, going through TSA, waiting to board, getting on the plane, looking out the window, etc. Then they’ll know what to expect when you arrive at the airport on travel day.

Plan in 15 Minutes: 

Estimate the time and length of the trip from beginning to end and make plans in 15 minute increments.  For instance, if you’re planning for a 5 hour flight you’ll know:

• The first 30 minutes your toddlers will be excited as they will have just boarded the plane; they’ll be looking out the window, watching the activity, seeing other planes, and watching luggage being loaded. Then you have the exciting take off to look forward to, too.
• Once the plane passes through the clouds, the show is over for the child and it’ll be time to start to calculate how to entertain your toddler for the remaining 4.5 hours left in the flight.
• You’ll want about 16 different 15-minute activities with some backups in mind, too, that will keep your toddler entertained throughout a long flight. My suggestions include the following:
• Start with a book – while they are still excited to fly.
• Bring a favorite toy – doll or action figure.
• Play dough is always a good item to have on-hand.
• Scotch tape can actually be quite entertaining.
• Don’t forget to factor in snack time – bring a good assortment.
• You can add 15 minutes for a trip to the bathroom or a diaper change.
• Get out of your seats (if the seatbelt sign is off) and walk around the plane.
• Coloring book and crayons are definite staples.
• Change seats with each other to get a fresh view of the surroundings.
• Talk to the seat neighbors if they’re friendly.
• Bring some toy-cars, or play items that allow for imaginary play.
• Bring some magnetic blocks, or other creative building toys

What to Expect as the Parent:

• You might want your child to nap on the plane, but you need to be prepared because that won’t always happen.   
• Parents should remain calm, and listen to the child’s excitements and fears.
• Make each activity last as long as possible. Take a diaper change, for example, walk slowly and explore on the way there and on the way back.
• Don’t rely on the airplane for a meal. Pack plenty of food for your child.
• Do not even think about yourself; consider yourself lucky if you get to glance at a magazine or close your eyes for a few seconds.
• Try to avoid taking out your computer unless your child is napping.
• Always have a “Def Con 5” item at your fingertips. What I call the Def Con 5 item is a toy you can pull out when your child is reaching melt down mode, and you still have 30 minutes trapped inside a plane.
• I try to keep the iPad hidden as a last resort, and not as a first choice item. I’ve used the iPad as a reward or something to look forward to.

Consider Your Toddler’s Health:

• Upon takeoff and landing, children under 3 have trouble clearing their ear pressure. You can help by ensuring they over-exaggerate yawning, drink lots of water, or chew on some goldfish.
• If you’re able to, I suggest wiping down your airplane area with cleaning cloths. Wipe down the trays, arm rests, front and back of seats, window shades, etc. to protect your child from harmful germs.
• Have your toddler wash his or her hands after going through TSA.
• If the child is under 2, I recommend bringing a car seat that they’re already used to and comfortable in.
• If you are going to bring an iPad make sure you also pack a pair of headphones that are comfortable and easy for the child to use.

The bottom line is the more relaxed and prepared you are, the easier it is for the child to learn to fly.  The more you fly, the more comfortable everyone will become.
