By Zara Lewis

Being a busy mom that is also savvy with time management is praise-worthy. Self-care is extremely important, so if you have found the time for working out while juggling other things in your everyday schedule, we salute you!

If gym is a regular to-do on your list, you must know how important proper skincare is. Air filth piling up, and mixing with skin’s natural oils and excessive sweat may result in breakouts and poor looking skin. When you exercise, your body temperature rises; your heartbeat increases as your heart pumps more blood to the vessels, the ones in your face included. If you’re wondering why you get the lobster-like color while other people don’t, it’s probably due to the fact your blood vessels are more superficial in the cheek area. Some things are genetic, but here’s what’s in your power and how you can work on prevention.

Minding the environment

Your skin is sensitive to external factors. While redness is caused by the regulation of the body temperature in the cooling-down process, the temperature and humidity of the room you’re exercising in, or the weather conditions your skin experiences while you jog – all have their impact on the overall skin’s look. Work out in a cool environment that enables your skin to breathe freely. Wear comfortable clothes that aren’t too tight and make sure you stay hydrated. As for the high-intensity workouts, you may want to scale it down and avoid switching between different intensities too quickly. Although it has its benefits for fat burning, you need to give your body time to gradually progress towards a different intensity workout: it will make your redness less visible and you’ll feel more relaxed during the mild cool-down process.

Prevention: using the right products

If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition such as rosacea, you are very prone to face-redness or might even experience broken capillaries. Either way, your skin is easily stressed out and irritated. This means you have to take particular care of what type of ingredients your beauty products contain, so you can provide your skin with what it needs in the long term. Don’t be lazy and read the ingredients list: choose moisturizers with natural ingredients, like aloe, honey, chamomile, or willow, which soothe sensitive skin. Don’t use products that contain retinol or chemical peels the night before a big workout. To restore your skin’s natural oils, use a face mask enriched with natural ingredients: they will help your skin calm down and become more resistant to outer influences. Invest in redness-reducing products and you can even bring them to your workout: a refreshing body spray will help your face cool down; nourishing wipes will ensure you remove the impurities during your training and cool your face.

Proper care is mandatory

Establishing a good beauty routine is crucial for well-cared skin during the times you’re breaking a sweat. Make sure you cleanse your face on a regular basis and use a gentle cleanser that contains anti-inflammatory ingredients such as green tea. Clean your skin before and after a workout. By all means, avoid wearing makeup to the gym – it will result in excessive filth accumulating on your skin, leaving you with blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. Avoid using hot water as it promotes dryness of your skin, making it more prone to redness. Don’t skip on using a moisturizing toner: it ensures all the impurities are removed and leaves you with a fresh-looking skin. In addition to taking care of your skin on the outside, make sure you do it from the inside, too. Proper nutrition is very important and do check your iron levels: its deficient may result in itchy and red skin, along with other problems.

When it comes to skin problems that occur due to exercising, prevention is the key. Take these simple steps into consideration, be disciplined with your workout and beauty routines, and enjoy leading a healthy life!d

Now that autumn is here that drive that built-up over the summer to stick with a solid workout schedule is faltering; Not to mention the sometimes overwhelmingly strong desire to live in those ultra-worn in yoga pants.

Do not give in ladies!

Just because the temperatures are falling, that doesn’t mean it is ok to veer off the path of fitness and looking foxy while you do it! Lucky for us, celebrity fitness trainer Lacey Stone offers these AWESOME tips, time-saving tricks and words of wisdom to keep up on track as the seasons change.

1. Lifestyle sweat pants: I like to layer my looks when I go to the gym, so these lifestyle “MC Hammer” pants are perfect for warming up with my spandex underneath. Post workout I put on these lifestyle “MC Hammer” pants and go out with friends: Saves time and space in your gym bag.

2. Support Bras for all shapes and sizes: For years women didn’t have supportive bras to workout in so I would see my friends wearing two even three sports [bras] to maintain the “bounce.” Nike and Lululemon have really taken notice design bras that are super supportive and even stylish:

Nike’s New Bra The Rival:

My pick for BEST supportive bra, The Shock Absorber:

My pick for most Fashionable support, Lululemon:

3. Shoe Functionality: Brands have now made it that you have to buy a specific tennis shoe for each particular activity. I actually think this is great technology as a trainer because the bottom of the shoe does have an impact on your workout

My favorite cross trainer: Nike Cross Technology “Diamond Flex”:

Asics tread is designed for running not lateral movement:

4. I love how well brands are blending clothes you can work out in and clothes you can hang out in.

This is one of my favorite gym to fashion looks from Nike:

5. Brands are designing Gym Bags that can double as a “Fashion” Style bag:

From NIKE:

And last but certainly not least, the extremely versatile Lululemon

Such fun, trendy and practical suggestions by Lacey Stone! So have at it ladies, time to keep this swim-suit bods in prime condition! And remember…

“Courage is not defined by those who fought and did not fall… It’s defined by those who fought fell and rose again.”

People can easily be sidelined from exposure to allergens including pollution, mold spores and pollen. “ When you’re outdoors, your body is exposed to many potential allergens that can trigger a cascade of miserable symptoms such as sneezing, congestion and itchy watery eyes.

Over the counter antihistamines can cause drowsiness and dry eyes and decongestants can cause racing heart, insomnia and even rebound congestion. Instead, Torkos has some natural suggestions to combat allergy symptoms:

Be careful about when you exercise. “Pollen counts are highest between 5am and 10am, so plan your outdoor exercise activities in the afternoon or evening or do it indoors.”

Use natural allergy relief eye drops. “Look for a product that can relieve itchy, watery, red eyes. I like Similasan Allergy Eye Relief because it contains natural active ingredients that help to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It does not contain any dyes, vasoconstrictors, decongestants or steroids. Plus it can be used regularly without a re-bound effect. There’s also a kids’ formula, so the whole family can benefit.”

Shower before going to bed. “Microscopic allergens like pollen can stick to your skin, hair and clothes. Wash them off before your head hits the pillow so you’re not breathing them in all night long.”

Wear a hat. “Hats will help keep allergens from attaching to your hair in the first place. As an added bonus, they provide some sun protection.”

Remember your sunglasses. “They’ll help to protect your eyes from allergens and bugs while you are walking, bike riding or running.”

Fight allergy fatigue. “Fighting foreign invaders such as pollen and dust can be physically draining. Keep energy levels high by eating slow release (low glycemic) carbs, lean protein and healthy fats such as avocado, fish and chia seed. Avoid processed and refined foods which may contain chemicals that can worsen allergy symptoms and fatigue.”

Add allergy-fighting foods your diet. “Red apples and onions, raspberries and green tea contain quercetin, a natural antihistamine. Yogurt and kefir will give your body beneficial bacteria that can help support proper immune function.”

Drink lots of water. “You’ve probably heard it at least 100 times. Your body needs water to stay hydrated and flush toxins out of the body. Drink water before, during and after exercise.”

Use an air purifier. “Rid your indoor air of potential allergens by using an air purifier. Also use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)filter on your air conditioner and change it monthly.”

Exercise indoors. “If your seasonal allergies still get the best of you when you’re outside, workout indoors. There are plenty of things you can do indoors, even without equipment, such as squats, lunges, stair climbing, sit ups and push ups. The key is to move your body.”

How Kym Johnson is changing the fitness game

You may know her as the talented, and insanely fit, dancer on Dancing with the Stars, or as a judge on Dancing with the Stars Australia, but what you may not know is that Kym Johnson is your new best friend to help you get into shape! She recently came out with her 5678 fitness program which includes exercise videos and a book that are designed to help keep you on track throughout your fitness journey.

I was able to speak with Kym about the program, what inspired her to create it, and even got some really great advice from the DWTS winner!

Kym’s inspiration for 5678 started when she began judging DWTS Australia, which meant she was no longer dancing eight hours a day and burning thousands of calories. As a result, she could no longer have the occasional hamburger without feeling the effects of it the next day. She knew she had to make a diet change, which was not going to be fun. In addition to a less active lifestyle, she was also constantly getting asked by people everywhere how they could get a great body like the celebs have at the end of the show. From all of her experience as a choreographer, she felt confident that she could create a program that everyone could enjoy and make a part of their daily routine.

That’s where 5678 comes in; where 5 stands for 5 protein sources, 6 is for the colors of the rainbow, 7 represents 7 anti-inflammatory foods, and 8 is for 8 glasses of water. This idea is based on the program that Kym worked on for herself with a nutritionist after she started judging DWTS. Having the numbers makes it an easy way to incorporate a healthier attitude into your lifestyle! The book that details 5678 has everything you need to get you inspired and started; from a menu guide to a recipe book and even stories about her time working with all of the celebrities on DWTS. Some of whom even collaborated with Kym on the book, including Florence Henderson who added a few of her own recipes. On top of other celebs contributing, she also has friends who are young moms in the book, adding their favorite recipes and giving advice for staying active during their busy days. Kym’s favorite part of the book are the gluten free pancake recipes, like the peaches and cream one, which she’ll often have for dessert. She’s also a huge fan of the tea recipes, especially the Sweet Comfort Tea which has cocoa and cinnamon- a great anti-inflammatory ingredient!

Then, there’s the 5678 DVD that is dance based and designed for anyone from a beginner to a total pro to get a good workout. The best part about the workout program is that it’s essentially interval training, meaning you go from high intensity cardio dance moves, like a jive, to moves that target your arms or legs. This means that you also get as much of a workout as you want, so if you want something low impact, all you have to do is slow down your jive! But don’t be surprised if you keep up with her pace as the workout itself will always keep you wanting to do more as you continue to learn new steps and start feeling just like the celebs on the show. Not to mention Kym’s super supportive attitude that makes you feel like you can conquer the world…or at least the dance floor!

And if you’re having trouble getting motivated, take some advice from Kym: if you’re really unmotivated, just tell yourself you’re only going to workout 15 minutes. You’ll often find that 15 minutes turns into you doing the entire workout once you’ve gotten started. This is a tactic she often used with the celebrities she trained. She would tell them that they’re just doing the first half of the routine, but found that once they did that, they would end up following through with the rest of it. Like she said, the hardest part of any workout, or anything in life for that matter, is just getting it started. But, once you do, you’ll always be happy with the end result.

This is obviously something she’s carried with her throughout her life. She started dancing at just 3 years old and ended up on DWTS Australia before she came to the US version to dance with Jerry Springer in her first US season. Although she was expecting George Clooney as her dance partner, she ended up getting some good advice from him: no matter what you’re doing in life, even if it’s just sweeping floors, just do a great job and you’ll get noticed and it’ll lead to something better. Kym has remembered this advice and it’s helped her when she’s working with a new partner each season. She notes that her partners really rely on her and have to trust her since they are put in an entirely new, and uncomfortable, situation of professional dancing. She becomes a quasi life coach to each of her dance partners, and hopes that that sort of coaching can shine through in her book and inspire readers to work hard to achieve their goals-fitness or otherwise.

And for anyone with kids looking to get into this industry, be prepared for a lot of hard work and a lot of rejection. But Kym believes that you have to have a sense of humor about it, and not let rejection get you down. You just have to remember that as long as you put in the hard work and have passion for what you do, the rest of it will fall into place! This is true not just for future dance stars, but for anyone working towards a goal.

So what’s next for this two-time DWTS winner? Well, she’s engaged to former dance partner and Shark Tank panelist Robert Herjavec and is busy planning their wedding. She says they’re thinking of dusting off their dancing shoes and having a big number at the reception. Fingers crossed we get a video!

Each year, 1 in 3 US women die of heart disease, killing approximately one woman every minute. Now is the time to start changing those odds through healthy eating and exercise.

We all know exercise is good for you (both physically and emotionally), but did you also know that exercise lowers your risk of stroke and heart disease, improves cholesterol and blood pressure, and more? The American Heart Association recommends you include 30 minutes of exercise into your daily routine.

If you don’t like to hit the gym, there are other activities you can incorporate in your routine. Walking around your neighborhood, taking a dance class, weight training, practicing yoga and tai chi, or even taking a martial art class can all help you live an active and healthy life.

Foods and supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids are another great way to improve your heart health. Studies have shown that incorporating omega-3s into your diet can help lower your risk for heart attack, stroke, and blood pressure.

What you can do to protect yourself

As part of a major effort to promote good oral health care, Waterpik® wants Americans to understand how they can prevent debris and bacteria from collecting in their mouths. Studies have shown that the lack of saliva (dry mouth) commonly found in those who strenuously exercise (fitness fanatics, athletes) and those who even take a number of medications (allergies, colds, weight loss) could be creating a breeding ground for many dental health problems.

Jay McCulloch, Vice President Global Marketing, Waterpik® Oral Health Products, “We first heard this following the 2012 Summer Olympics. The British Journal of Sports Medicine reported in 2013 that 75 percent of the Olympian athletes had gum disease. This was very surprising considering one would associate elite athletes with good oral health care. An article in the New York Times recently quoted experts from University Hospital Heidelberg who said that poor oral health had to do with a reduction in saliva after exercising, leading to cases of Dry Mouth. Saliva has high levels of oxygen, which helps to keep the bad anaerobic bacteria at bay; thus, Dry Mouth provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria that is associated with bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay. Saliva is also a natural cleanser that helps wash unwanted debris and bacteria away.”

McCulloch said it is obvious that an athlete is not going to stop working out and playing sports. “However, what they should do is improve their dental hygiene regimen to remove the debris and bacteria lurking deep between teeth and below the gumline that is really causing the problems. The Waterpik® Water Flosser is the ideal tool for this job.”

McCulloch also added that the Waterpik® Water Flosser has precisely controlled pressure and pulsation settings that are clinically proven to remove plaque bacteria and improve gum health. It also features a new pulse-modulation technology that provides enhanced gum stimulation. The Water Flosser’s action of stimulating and massaging the gums may stimulate saliva production and alleviate dry mouth in addition to removing the bad bacteria. “We are constantly updating our technology to meet the demands of active lifestyles.”

Technology has taken our obsession with tracking calories one step further will the birth of new gadgets that cover a wide array of health and wellness. Fitness gadgets can track the number of stairs you climb, calories you burn, distance you walk, active minutes, quality of sleep, heart rate and more… but there is more to health and wellness than just tracking numbers. Here are five innovative health gadgets that are more than trackers and are worth reading about.

Stress has a huge factor on how we feel and function throughout our day, so why not measure your brain fitness? Introducing Muse, is the newest brain sensing headband. Muse is essentially a treadmill for your mind. This little tool is based after the electroencephalography (EEG) which many clinics use to measure electrical impulses in your brain, or in simple terms, it measures your brain signals. Muse takes your signals, creates a baseline and then teaches you how to focus your attention through brain exercises. The gadget uses the sound of the wind to inform you of your progress.
Moms have to be the busiest people on the planet! Between 2am feedings, running the kids to school and activities, working and running a household, who has time to go to the gym? Working out at home saves time and money. Fitness experts say you only need 30 minutes of exercise a day to make a difference. By incorporating exercise into your daily routine you get to bond with your kids while teaching them a healthy lifestyle.

If you’re a new mom, as soon as your doctor clears you to resume moderate exercise, get outside and take the baby for a walk. Postpartum exercise has many benefits:

Improved immune function and increased production of antioxidants.

Increased energy levels during the day which is conducive to more restful sleep.

Better flexibility and muscular strength, reduced joint strain.

Suppressed cravings for sweets and increased appetite for nutrient dense foods.

Most women don’t realize that they can resume Kegel exercises within 48 hours of a healthy vaginal delivery. These deep pelvic floor exercises increase the speed of healing to the rectal and vaginal area by increasing blood flow and circulation directly to the muscles that make up the pelvic floor. Strengthening pelvic floor muscles reduces and may prevent urinary stress incontinence. Incontinence affects up to 70 percent of women during or after pregnancy. Consult a doctor before starting any exercise after a C-section. Be cautious as a new mom not to overdo it. Avoid doing sit ups until you know you don’t have separation of your deep abdominal muscles. This condition is called diastasis recti. Ask your doctor to check for this as it is not necessarily part of your postpartum exam.

Most moms might ask themselves, “How can I possibly fit in an exercise program with a baby?” The answer is to work out WITH your baby! That’s right, here are 10 fun tips to promote a healthy lifestyle while getting fit with your kids:

1) “Peek-a-boo” Plank over baby – Get on your hands and knees, place hands on both sides of your baby. Engage deep abdominal muscles. Stretch one leg out behind you at a time until both legs are straight. Make a straight line from your head to heels, in a push up position. Rock backward and forward by pushing with your toes and say, “Peek-a-boo” 10 times

2) Kisses –Tricep Pushup – Get on your hands and knees, place hands on both sides of your baby. Engage deep abdominal muscles. Stretch one leg out behind you at a time until both legs are straight, push up position (or on knees for ladies push up position) Make a straight line from your head to heels. Bend elbows and kiss your baby. 10 times

3) Meow and Moo – Cat and Cow – Get on your hands and knees, place hands on both sides of your baby. Round your spine like an angry cat and say “A cat says, Meow”, then arch your back squeezing your shoulder blades together and say “A cow says, Moo”. 10 times

4) Nursery rhyme Squats – With baby on the floor or for an extra challenge hold baby safely in your arms. Sing the ABC’s or other nursery rhyme songs while performing squats. Start by standing with feet shoulder width apart, bend knees in a deep squat by pressing your heels into the ground and sitting back as if you are lowering down onto a bench, bend slightly forward from the hips as you go down, then return to an upright standing position.

5) As baby gets bigger interact with him on a squishy beach ball sized ball.
Get the ball Leg Swings – While lying on your side, place the ball under your ribs. Lift your top leg, swing it in front of you then and behind you. Allow a slight movement of the upper body front and back. Concentrate on leg motion and body lengthening in each direction. Encourage your child try to get the ball out from under you and run around your legs.

6) Try to grab the ball Bridge – Lie on back, bent knees, squeeze ball between knees. Lengthen spine while lifting hips up towards the ceiling, starting with tailbone and move up the body. While in table position, squeeze and release the ball between your knees but don’t let the ball drop to the floor. Encourage your toddler to grab the ball when you are releasing the squeeze. Add hip pulses to the ceiling for increased difficulty.

7) Throw the ball Lats – If your child is able to catch a ball, throw the ball to him, if he is too young to participate, throw the ball against a wall. The higher the ball is thrown, the more intense the shoulder workout. Catching the ball will work the lats.

8) As kids get older, play Airplane Abs – Lie on your back, knees bent, feet in the air. Prop your child onto your feet. Hold their hands and slowly press your legs to their belly and lift them toward the ceiling with them balanced on your feet. Engage abdominal muscles and take them on a little plane ride. Bend and straighten your knees, slightly moving your legs towards you and away. Avoid side to side motion to preserve balance.

9) Teach your child how to ride a bike Jog – Jog next to your child while they learn to ride a bike. Spend time outside, get fresh air. Switch off with another adult if you get winded.

10) Dance Party Cardio – Kids love to dance. Turn on child appropriate music and dance it out. Dancing is great cardio. Be silly, laugh and have fun!

As you can see, the goal is to make exercise fun and interactive. You don’t have to have perfect form while working out with the kids, just be active. Be a consistent example for your kids by modeling a healthy lifestyle. They will love exercise if you do.

Courtesy of CoachUp, www.coachup.com

Staying active during summer vacation is one of the most important determining factors in whether your child establishes healthy living habits and develops general athleticism. Summertime presents a prime opportunity for young athletes to catch up to their teammates and even surpass competitors in fitness, strength and skill.

Parents have a number of options for helping their athletes make the most of summer training, and a popular choice is enlisting their child in sports camps. In fact, according to a recent survey by American Express, parents will spend more than $600 per child on summer activities like sports teams, pool memberships and camps.

Camps offer several benefits as they provide consistent activity and sport-specific guidance. For young athletes, camps are not only an introduction to group training, but are also a great way to get socially acclimated in organized sports. Unfortunately, camps often last just a few days, and cannot replace three months of consistent activity.

Parents can help their athlete by making exercise a routine over the summer. Even parents without a sports background can help their athlete. Timing an athlete, counting reps, completing drills and taking them on bike rides, trail runs or to a local swimming pool are ways to get your child active. Come preseason, the transition to regular practice will not be abrupt or a shock. Your athlete will begin his or her season in shape, which will lead to better confidence in play and reduced anxiety.

Coaches will also take note—just ask former NFL player and CoachUp coach Izaan Cross.

“For young players especially, conditioning always serves as a giveaway for the type of work that a player has put in during the offseason,” Cross said. “You can also tell if a player has stayed active or partaken in summer training camp by questioning their knowledge of the game. If they can answer questions that they would not have been able to answer the prior season, or they do not make the same mistakes that they made the prior season, they most likely continued their growth as an athlete during the offseason.”

As for the perfect summer training blend, aim to be active every day with a few days off. Cross said that for a child ages 5-10 years old usually an hour of exercise a few days a week is sufficient.

“That can be at a camp or clinic, private coaching, cross training with friends, training individually or with a parent, general exercising,” Cross clarified. He also added, “film study, speed training, flexibility work, and weight room availability become vital for an athlete especially once you get in the upper teenage years.”

Potential star athletes often show high general athletic ability before learning the nuances of a sport; improving general fitness will make your child a contender for making top teams and starting positions down the road. Regardless of a child’s future career as an athlete, adopting a routine of exercise will help your child establish life-long healthy habits.

Pros of camps:

They last just a few days or weeks.

Your child can practice with nearby athletes he/she might see at practice or competition.

Your child will be exposed to different coaching styles or training, especially for out of state camps

Your child will meet athletes from other areas, improving their quality of training and potentially creating new friendships.

Cons of camps

Your child is one of many and may not get individual attention.

Your child could learn bad habits from other athletes.

If your child gets sick or injured at the beginning of camp, the value of the camp diminishes.

Routines and regimes are tailored for the group; your child’s specific needs may be overlooked or not addressed.

Camps can be expensive.

By Mackenzie Kelly

Are you one of the millions of women looking to lose weight or improve your health this New Year? Health and fitness related resolutions for women are always a popular lifestyle goal as the clock nears midnight. Hitting the gym and eating right is difficult to begin, but could have you dropping dress sizes in no time. Make your resolution a successful one by sticking to it and keeping the promise to yourself.

Physical exercise is a key component to losing weight. There is no question that it is one of the most important aspects of weight loss and may be the one ingredient that you have not accepted yet. If you don’t exercise, you will surely have a difficult time sculpting a new, healthier body. Having difficulty knowing where to start? Cardio is necessary, but don’t forget the weight-training component. High Intensity Interval Training has become popular among women, and for good reason. This type of training combines cardiovascular fitness with strength/hypertrophic training and will be a guaranteed sweat. The general protocol for HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) revolves around working extremely hard for 30-60 seconds and resting for 1-3 minutes. If that doesn’t’ sound interesting to you, standard cardiovascular work on one of the many machines the gym has available is a sure way to drop some pounds. Remember, walking is necessary if you are just starting out or are cooling down, but getting your heart rate into higher ranges is a definite way to burn more calories.

Workout routines can be hard to establish, and will without a doubt require some tweaking along the way. Everyone’s body is different and you must accept the fact that all people start in a unique physical position. Going to the gym and trying an intense workout in your first week might not be a good idea if you want to establish a long-term habit. Work your way up to the intense workouts and always remember that you aren’t competing against anyone but yourself. Take it slow and make sure to keep your workout inside your comfort zone for the first while. Slowly push yourself once in a while for motivation to prove to yourself that you can start to increase your intensity. Waking up sore and exhausted is not the goal in the initial months of a new fitness plan, as this usually leads to resistance and missed gym sessions.

As important as physical activity is, a healthy diet is where the biggest road to betterment lies. Eating healthy and exercising go hand in hand, and will exponentially increase the rate of your results. You’ll want to stock up on lean meats, vegetables, nuts, healthy oils and fruits. These items should make up the majority of your diet. A treat once in a while is fine, but avoid processed and refined foods as often as possible. Make sure that you don’t skip meals, and have healthy snack available at your disposal in case something comes up.

Make this year the year you succeed by following a proper exercise and diet regime. If you happen to fall away from healthy eating or skip the gym, don’t let it get you off track. Jump right back into and forget about the past. You are working towards a better you, which will make all of this work worth it.
