Plus how to help manage your own worst allergy symptoms this spring

(BPT) – For many, spring’s warmer weather is welcomed with spending more time outside. But for allergy sufferers, the season can mean facing symptoms that make them look and feel bad.

TV host, busy mom and longtime allergy sufferer Brooke Burke-Charvet has teamed up again with the makers of non-drowsy Claritin products to share her “My Claritin Clear Challenge”. The new two-minute video shares a sneak peek into Brooke’s daily life and gives an idea of how she’s able to handle some big and small everyday challenges without having to worry about her allergies.

Brooke’s story shows her tackling daily tasks related to family, work and friends that the 40 million Americans who suffer from indoor or outdoor allergies may also face. “Spring is a very busy time for me. I’m back hosting Dancing with the Stars so my TV season is in full swing, my kids are more active and demanding and we love spending as much time outdoors as possible. I certainly don’t have time for allergy symptoms to get in my way,” says Brooke. “That’s why I was happy to take on the challenge. It’s simple, as soon as your allergy symptoms start, take one 24-hour non-drowsy Claritin every day of your allergy season, as long as your triggers remain, for continuous relief or your money back. So for me it’s as long as the pollen keeps flying.”

Common allergy symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose and itchy watery eyes and can really get in the way of people’s everyday lives – impacting sleep, performance at work and other daily activities.

According to a new survey of allergy sufferers commissioned by Merck this year:

* 72 percent of adults with seasonal allergy symptoms admit they don’t feel like themselves when they’re suffering from allergy symptoms, leaving them sluggish, irritable and miserable.

* Allergy symptoms were the cause of almost four missed work days in the past year. The majority of allergy sufferers say it’s hard to concentrate on work when suffering from allergy symptoms and nearly half of allergy sufferers admit to being less productive at the office due to allergy symptoms.

* 51 percent agree they are no fun to be around when they are suffering from seasonal allergy symptoms.

* Seasonal allergy sufferers spend less time exercising (55 percent), cleaning (45 percent), and having a social life (37 percent) than they would like to because of their allergy symptoms.

* And 62 percent of seasonal allergy sufferers’ sleep less during allergy season.

“The good news is there are ways to help manage allergies and relieve symptoms,” says Dr. Robert Eitches, an allergy specialist. Here are some tips to help you survive the spring season:

* Beat the clock: Peak pollen production can occur in early morning, so try to plan outside activities at other times of the day.-

* Wash wisely: If you are going to be outside, it’s a good idea to shower and wash your hair when you return indoors to remove the pollen, which can be an allergy trigger. This prevents it from being transferred to your furniture and linens.

* Check the forecast: People with seasonal allergies should check for pollen counts in their area.- Pollen levels can vary day-to-day depending upon several factors, including the weather.

This spring, Claritin is encouraging allergy sufferers to try the challenge for themselves for continuous relief and is offering a money back guarantee. For more details on the challenge and the money back guarantee, visit www.ClaritinChallenge.com and Brooke’s full story can be seen at YouTube.com/Claritin.

Owner Greg O’Sullivan, first created KidSwitch when his two-year-old daughter suffered an injury after falling off a make-shift toy “ladder” that she had created to reach her light switch. He knew there had to be a better way. Nearly 15 years later, KidSwitch has become a parents dream to this common problem.

KidSwitch glows in the dark and is simple to install. We also love the fact that it teaches toddler energy-saving habits at an early age and really makes potty training work at night! No more scary trips to a dark bathroom!

KidSwitch was voted by consumers at the Best Child Safety Product of 2008, and we can see why. Parents love that their toddlers no longer have to rely on them for this repetitive task, and it gives the child the self-confidence they need to say “I did it myself!”

The quintessential outdoor trip for every family is the camping trip.

The post Easy Tips for Family Camping appeared first on AKA Mom Magazine.

By Daddy Nickell

The quintessential outdoor trip for every family is the camping trip. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a total newbie, you’re going to want to take a tip or two from me, as camping with kids can be complicated – but it’s definitely worth it!

Be Kid-Friendly: Plan ahead and research your destination prior to going. If you’re camping with a small child you likely don’t want to camp in a destination near cliffs, cactus or poison ivy. Additionally, you’re going to want to have games, toys and activities that you brought along just for your child! Make the trip kid-friendly. If you have to drive a far distance to make it to the camping location you probably want to check into any kid-friendly roadside attractions or activities you can all enjoy along the way. Remember, everything changes once you have children, and you’re going to need to modify the way you used to camp, too!

Have an Adventure: Kids love adventure (as do most dads!). An adventure can be as small as collecting pinecones, drawing a picture in the sand, building something out of rocks and sticks, going for a hike, etc. Have fun as you go, and share in the moments of adventure and exploration with your child. Being outdoors and playing in the dirt can be both wholesome and educational. Give your child time to do their thing – learning about trees, plants, flowers and all of nature’s beauty along the way.

Be Prepared: Bottom line – you’re going to want to be prepared for anything – and everything! Bring extra diapers, extra clothes, plenty of warm items and comfort items, too. Have books and soothing toys squirreled away incase your child has a hard time and needs some comfort from home. I suggest going all out and loading your car full of everything you could possibly need, if you do that, chances are you’ll be prepared for every event.

Take Baby Steps: Take it small. Camp in the backyard a couple of times before actually heading out for a “real” camping trip. I also think it’s important to begin your first “real” camping trip in a campground, so you’ll have some amenities and you’ll likely be close to a town should something go wrong – finger’s crossed they won’t. You can build up to a larger multiple night campout in a more secluded location after you develop your child’s camping skills in the yard and at a campground. Trust me when I say learning to camp is an art, and you don’t want to rush it!

Be a Teacher: Use every opportunity you get to teach your child about something. While camping you might be able to teach your child how to fish, to tie special knots, to set up a tent to name a species of bird, etc. The things you teach your child while camping are sure to stick with them and they’ll reflect on the memories with fondness in their later years.

Don’t Push It: Camping just isn’t for everyone, and I totally get that. So my last tip is not to push it too hard. If your child isn’t enjoying camping don’t force them to go. Give it a year and try again. Build a special fort in the living room instead and have a family movie night/slumber party! Everybody is different, and we certainly need to respect that and appreciate each person’s individuality.

Enjoy every moment and treasure the entire journey, because, let’s face it, sometimes the journey can be the greatest adventure, and your kids may even remember the journey better than they’ll remember the destination.

Happy camping and happy parenting!

Sincerely,

Daddy Nickell

By Melanie K Nelson

Your bedroom should be a place of ultimate relaxation, but with life as a busy mom, that isn’t always the case. It’s not always practical to do a complete remodel of your room just to make it more relaxing, but if you step back and think about each of your five senses, you can find small changes that can make a big difference.

SIGHT

Sight is possibly the most important sense to consider when creating a relaxing environment because it is often the most overwhelming sense. Since it is such an important one, I am going to break it up into beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Beginner Tip: If you don’t want to invest a lot of money into this project, no worries! One of the biggest things that you can do to create a more welcoming and relaxing environment is completely free; organize. It is nearly impossible to relax when you are surrounded by clutter. If a total reorganization seems overwhelming, break it in to reasonable sized tasks and tackle this project over several days. This may not be the most tip fun but trust me, it will make a huge difference!

Intermediate Tip: If you are looking to make a bigger change, start thinking about color! Studies have proven time and time again that color plays a serious role in your mood. There are two main schools of thought for selecting colors for rooms. The traditional route is to focus on soothing, cool colors like blue and purple for your bedroom. Your other option is to pick colors that really make you happy. If you hate the “cool” colors but green is the color that make you happiest, you will be a much happier person in a green room than you will ever be in a purple room. However you select the right color for you, bring that color in with a coat of paint, a new throw blankets or even just some fun candles!

Advanced Tip: I decided to make this tip the advanced tip because it could require a new piece of furniture or, even more major, a change in behavior. GET RID OF TV. I know some of you might be staring at your computers, shocked that I would ever write such a thing, but hear me out! We are constantly surrounded by our TVs, computers, phones, tablets and every other screen that we possible can. There is something to be said for having one room in your house that isn’t “plugged-in” 24/7. A room where you can relax with a book or even just your thoughts. If the thought of no TV at all in the bedroom is too drastic, try putting it somewhere where it can be completely covered up, like in a hutch or cabinet. Just having the ability to make all of the screens disappear can do wonders on the atmosphere of the room!

SOUND

An easy way to create a more peaceful environment is through sound. There are whole CDs, apps and websites dedicated to relaxing sounds. You will be amazed at the difference soothing sounds can have on your ability to fall asleep quickly, relax more fully, or meditate more deeply. My favorite way to fall asleep is listening to raindrops fall, but now I get to listen to it regardless of the weather!

TOUCH

The key to making your tough sense tingle is different for every woman. Think of what texture makes you happiest, is it silk? Faux fur? Flannel? Whatever the texture, try to incorporate that in as many places as possible; bed sheets, blankets, pillows and even pajamas! Looking for a different way to incorporate touch? You can’t go wrong with some massage oils!

SMELL

For me, there is no better scent than warm notes of vanilla. I have vanilla candles, lotions and perfume! Figure out the smell that makes you most relaxed and run with it. If you need a starting place try lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, or jasmine, as they are all known for being calming. Investing in an essential oil diffuser is great way to make sure that your favorite sent surrounds you from the moment you walk into your room!

TASTE

Finally, how do you incorporate taste into your bedroom sanctuary? There is something to be said for a well-stocked bowl of dark chocolate!

By Amanda Johnson

“Draw four cards! Ha!” He threw that UNO card down with intensity.

Sitting to his left, I added another Draw Four card to his, and then his daddy added one too.

“Oh Grandma! You have to pick up TWELVE cards!” He pointed and laughed, obviously enjoying the bit of revenge he was getting for her previous win.

“Oh no, I don’t!” She stuck her tongue out at him and threw down another one.

His daddy and I gasped in unison with him and waited for his reaction. He sat there, stuck in the moment, for almost a minute before the tears started.

“Sixteen cards? I don’t want to play anymore!” He said it, but started to pick up the cards at the same time. He loved this game and the family time that surrounded it, so he took a deep breath and started to count cards into his hand.

About the fifth card in, his face shifted from sadness to excitement, and he told us why through some slightly sadistic laughter, “Oh, you guys better watch out. I have only picked up five of the cards, and they are all deadly.” The smile slipped across his face, and we all laughed, grateful to see him finding the opportunity in the challenge.

His dad and I giggled about the funny moment, and how he ended up kicking our butts, before we went to bed that night.

As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about how amazing it was to see him so quickly shift from an upset to an opportunity, and I thought about what a perfect mirror that was for my life.

He was 5 years old at the time, and I was just learning how to dream again. I’d found my message and the value I bring to the world, I’d attracted a Secret Teacher into my life in just 3 months, and it was all magic…until I felt like God made me “draw sixteen on my dreams” again!

How many times have I gotten excited about a dream,
only to watch it die?

How many times will God allow the doors to slam,
before I just say “Screw it” and give up?

Have you drawn sixteen on your dreams?

And just a few years later, I found myself in the same spot…again. All I could do was shake my fist at the heavens and scream for an answer.

The one that came blew my mind, and made me vow to share it with everyone who crosses my path.

Essentially, I did what my son had done many years before…I found the opportunity, the purpose, for all of those slammed doors.

And it changed my life…FAST!

Just three years later, I am living my dream – running a business that is transforming lives and delivering powerfully healing messages into the world.

What are you going to do with the cards you have -–
let the dream die, or find the opportunity?

By Melanie K. Nelson

From an 80’s child star to a New York Times bestselling author, producer, inspirational speaker, wife and mother, actress Candace Cameron Bure sat down with AKA Mom to share her journey.

AKAMom: Thank you so much for speaking with me today!

Candace: Absolutely, thanks for having me!

AKAMom: As we all know, you grew up in the spotlight, in front of all of America on Full House, what was it like to grow up as a child star?

Candace: Well, I don’t know any other way! It was all pretty great for me. I really enjoyed acting and that is why I stayed in it, I was never pressured to be in it, you know if I didn’t like it any more my parents always just told me to tell them and I could stop any time, but I really loved it so it’s just how I ended up growing up. My family was very normal otherwise, very grounded, so working was a part of my life but it wasn’t my whole life. So I didn’t really feel very different from the rest of my friends, even though I was doing commercials and on a television show!

AKAMom: That’s great! Did you feel any pressures being in the industry as you were growing up at such a pivotal point in your life?

Candace: No, you know I didn’t ever feel pressure just because my parents always place the first priority in our life on our family and always made decisions that were for our best interest as children, so I knew that they were protecting me no matter what and like I said I really enjoyed it all so I didn’t have any outside pressures at all which I completely attribute that to my parents for being really good guardians and really taking care of me and looking out for me. But certainly there were moments when you are growing up on national television where you in front of millions of people when you go through awkward stages and those weren’t always that fun! So there were awkward times, but no pressure.

AKAMom: That’s wonderful. Have you ever thought about if you hadn’t gotten in to acting what would you have done? What would be your parallel universe career?

Candace: I think about that all the time! It is so crazy because I started [acting] at the age of five, I didn’t really think about that much growing up because I loved what I was doing, but as an adult now, not that I am “Miss Fashionable” but I tell you I love fashion and clothes and shoes and styling! I think I might be in that world somehow, as like a personal stylist or something!

AKAMom: Absolutely! I have noticed that in all of your appearances and interviews you are always very stylish, how would you define your style?

Candace: I don’t know, I think it has evolved over the years and my style changes with each stage of my life, I mean I think that is natural for anyone but I feel like within the past 5 or 6 years I feel like I really came in to my own style and found what makes me feel comfortable. I feel like I look good in it but it’s practical at the same time. This is probably too long of an answer but I love clothes a lot and I can look through a magazine but you look at so many great pieces but when you go to put them on, especially with shoes or constrictive clothing, they aren’t very practical! You can’t walk around in them or you are feeling self-conscious or you are tugging and pulling, or your ankles are trying to turn because your heels are too high, even though the outfit looks amazing!

AKAMom: Exactly, we have all been there!

Candace: I used to try that in my early 20’s, but now that I am in my thirties and obviously a mom too, I just got very particular about what I buy. I have to make sure that it moves with me and that I can move quickly in it, and not be tugging and pulling at it. But anyways, all that being said I think my style is pretty classic in a sense, I am not overly trendy, and certainly not high fashion because it isn’t practical but I am pretty West Coast, California, like hip casual. So I can transition most of my day outfits into a night outfit just by changing up a jacket or a heel or a belt or something like that.

AKAMom: I also have heard that you are a fellow shoe addict, how many pairs of shoes do you have?

Candace: Oh Lord, way too many! I think… OK, the sad thing is that I give away so many pairs of shoes a year so it’s not like they have just been accumulating for years, so they come in and out. But I think I have in my closet, I am embarrassed to say, I am sure that there are over 250 pairs of shoes. I even have a couple boxes in storage. I really love shoes!

AKAMom: I completely understand! So what is your favorite pair?

Candace: That is like asking me who my favorite child is! I can’t pick one pair of shoes! There are just too many purposes for them. But let’s see, what I am wearing right now, which have transitioned me great from L.A. winter into spring, I have these little Sam Edelman like half-boots, I just featured them on my blog last week. They are just little taupe colored half-boots that have some fringe down the side. Their really walkable, but I can throw them on with skinny jeans or a cute little pair of shorts or I don’t know really anything.

AKAMom: The perfect go-to versatile shoe?

Candace: Yes, definitely!

AKAMom: Perfect, well I wanted to talk to you about your book, Reshaping it All. You ventured from acting to writing very successfully, what caused you to write this book?

Candace: I have been speaking at lots of churches and woman’s conferences all over the country for about 10 years now, and I used to write for an online magazine as well, and when I used to talk to all of these women there was one consistent question. People would see me and remember what I looked like at 15 years old from Full House, and then they would see me now. When I was younger with my chubby little cheeks, then they would see me now and realize that I have three kids and they would ask me how I was working out and what I was eating, they wanted my whole fitness routine and all of that kind of stuff. That was a question that I keep getting asked constantly and that whole part of my life was a journey and so when I would talk to these women, it became so much more than ‘hey, I eat lean proteins for lunch and I work out 3 days a week’. It was much more of an emotional issue for me, which so many of us deal with, where we turn to food for comfort. For me, it was really turning to my faith for comfort from whatever I was going through, to get the immediate gratification that is found, for so many of us, in food. So anyways, as I realized that this is such a prevalent question for me, that so many of my fans and my audience were wanting to talk to me about, little by little I began to think that there was enough there to write a book to share my story and to give a lot of practical advice that I learned through the years that can help others get on the right track with their bodies and faith and the emotional issues that go with it.

AKAMom: Yeah, absolutely. So, the book’s subtitle is “Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness.” While physical fitness is such an everyday term, people don’t usually think about spiritual fitness, what does that tern mean in your own words?

Candace: I think it is just like physical fitness. We train for something to be in shape and spiritual fitness is the same thing where we train the mind about spiritual things and for me that is reading my bible everyday and knowing the word of God. I renew my mind and my spirit by knowing what God has to say and I see his truths and his promises that are laid out in his word and then storing them up in my heart and my mind and relying on his view and what he has to say about me and my body and how to take care of it and not just the world view-point about what beauty is and what health is. It is amazing to realize that God has talked all about those things, but that there are many things that are different than the standards that the world places on you. Just like when we look at fashion magazines or those types of beauty standards, a lot of them are unrealistic views, where I can look to God’s words and say God says I am fearfully wonderfully made just because He made me just the way I am and I am perfectly unique and wonderful. So those are the things that are spiritual fitness for me.

AKAMom: That’s great! Now I know that you are actually working on a new movie right now, can you tell me a little bit about that?

Candace: Sure I am in Vancouver right now filming a Hallmark Christmas movie that will be out this Christmas called “Let it Snow.” I have a very cute co-star that I am working with, Jesse Hutch.

AKAMom: That’s always a nice plus!

Candace: Definitely!

AKAMom: So can you give us any hints as to what we will see in the movie?

Candace: This movie is about two people finding themselves and finding their identities in the midst of, and really in spite of, their family issues. Simply put, it’s a romantic comedy, obviously set at Christmas time.

AKAMom: Well, we will be sure to look out for that! What other projects do you currently have in the works?

Candace: Well, I have a movie that is airing on GMC on May 18th is called Finding Normal.

AKAMom: And what can you tell us about that movie?

Candace: Well my character is Dr. Lisa Leland and this movie is a little like Doc. Hollywood in the sense that I play an L.A. doctor who is moving to the east coast. She is just making all the money and has a great lifestyle, and on the drive to move she gets stuck in this small town in Louisiana. She gets stuck there for about three days and meeting all of the town’s people she realizes that she had her life really mapped out but that it might not be the life that God has mapped out for her. It makes her take a second look and reevaluate her life.

AKAMom: Do you think that this is a movie that women will be able to relate to with their own stories?

Candace: Absolutely, and it is a fun, family friendly movie. Again, it is on GMC which is uplifting entertainment, so it is not just a story for women but for the whole family. There is definitely something in there for everyone to take a look at. All of these movies, the types of movies that I do, are there to not only entertain you but to inspire you to take a look at yourself and your life and this one makes you think about your priorities.

AKAMom: That’s great! So what can we expect from you in the future?

Candace: Well I just finished the manuscript for my next book but that is not going to be released until January 2014 but that book is called Balancing it All. It is really my story on purpose and priorities. I am super excited to have the next book come out and it is really about family and work, being a wife and being a Mom, and faith.

AKAMom: That is very exciting!

Candace: Yeah, it is a reflection of my life and how I have managed to do that and the lessons that hopefully readers will take away from.

AKAMom: Well we will definitely look forward to Balancing it All coming out! Do you see yourself continuing writing or focusing more on acting? Or a combination of both?

Candace: I would love to keep doing both! We will see, hopefully Balancing it All with be as successful as Reshaping it All has been! I love the writing aspect, it’s great, and I love to continue with that, but acting is my first love and priority as far a work. That is really my passion!

AKAMom: That’s great, it was so wonderful to speak with you today and we will look forward to your new movie, Finding Normal, on May 18th and all of your other exciting upcoming projects!

So get ready because I am going to walk you through some of my favorite products to help you get your best hair, skin, nails and even teeth! Warning, you might just find your new must-have products!

Ever since supermodel Niki Taylor turned me on to Nature’s Bounty Optimal Solutions, there is rarely a morning at my house that doesn’t start with a chocolate protein shake! Made by women for women, Nature’s Bounty Complete Protien & Vitamin Shake Mix is the perfect blend of everything that women need for energy, immune health, bone health, digestive health, healthy hair, skin and nails, and a metabolism boost. As if that list wasn’t enough it also tastes amazing! In addition to the shakes, the Optimal Solutions line has vitamins and supplements for a range of needs including menopause support; hair, skin and nail growth; and bone density. Remember, beauty starts from the inside out and Nature’s Bounty Optimal Solutions has everything you need to build a great foundation!

After your hair, skin and nails are looking great, it is time to move on to your teeth. There is nothing like the confidence that a radiant, white smile gives you! If your teeth aren’t quite there yet, have no fear Luster has the solution! Want gorgeous results instantly? Start with Luster’s 30-Minute Pro White System. This kit channels the same light-activated whitening technology that dentists use to produce visibly whiter teeth in less time than it takes to catch up with the Real Housewives! If you want to maintain these newfound pearly whites, brush your teeth with the Power White Toothpaste. This toothpaste (on it’s own) produces whiter teeth in 1 week, so pair it with the Pro White System and warn your friends not to look you directly in the teeth! Added bonus: both products are enamel safe and won’t cause tooth sensitivity!

Now that your teeth are movie star-white let’s move on to your skin. Is your face as smooth, bright and healthy as you want it to be? Don’t pick your face products simply based on pretty packaging and catchy commercials, trust in a line of products backed by 25 years of research. The Nia24 line is a cutting edge, Niacin-powered skin therapy that works its way deep into your skin to treat it from the inside out. This complete line of products will help balance your complexion and reverses the signs of sun damage. Nia24 is lightweight and non-greasy, so it is perfect under make-up or on a make-up free day. The whole line is wonderful but my favorite product is the Rapid Exfoliating Serum, which leaves my skin bright and smooth!

If you have read my previous beauty articles you have probably heard me rant about my Boots No7 Beautiful Skin Day Cream which has been my go-to face lotion for years, but I have found a new love and my days with my Beautiful Skin Cream might be history! So what is this new product that has stolen my heart, or um skin? Boots No7 Protect & Perfect line! Ok so I didn’t stray too far, but when you find a company that makes great products for a great price, you stick with it! The Protect & Perfect line has everything I loved about the Beautiful Skin line with the added bonus of fighting signs of aging! My favorite products from the line are the Protect & Perfect Serum and Protect & Perfect Eye Serum.

We are finally getting some warm weather and that means plenty of time in the sun. There are few things more annoying than reaching for your sunscreen or lip balm to find it’s completely melted! The solution is Cool-it Caddy! Simply throw these stylish little make-up bags in the freezer until frozen, then remove, throw in any make-up and products that you want to keep cool, and you’re ready for fun in the sun. These are perfect for time at the beach, picnics, the boat, or by the pool. Added bonus: the chilled products will feel amazing on your warm skin!

Have you ever wondered what the secret is to achieving an even complexion? For many people, the problem isn’t what product they are using but how they are using it. Fingers, brushes and angled sponges can leave your foundation looking streaky and unnatural. Do you ever wonder was celebrity make-up artists use to make the stars look flawless? The answer is the Beauty Blender. It is a sponge for blending your make-up that is simple in concept but perfectly executed! It has the beauty editors at Allure raving, naming it Beauty Tool of the Year four times. What makes it so special? The perfectly teardrop shape and satin-like texture allows it to glide over your skin, smoothing away any imperfections.

We have all heard the term “beauty sleep” but do you ever wake up with a tired face and crazy hair and wonder where on earth that phrase came from? The problem could be your pillowcase! Standard cotton pillowcases can actually damage your hair, cause you to develop fine lines, and gasp even wrinkles! It has long been known that sleeping on a satin pillowcase can reduce these nasty sleep side effects but one company is taking it a step further. Cupron’s Cosmetic Pillowcase will actually reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin tone while you sleep, allowing you to wake up looking and feeling younger! The pillowcase is made of a satin-polyester weave with a 270 thread-count, so it’s bound to be the comfiest place you’ve ever rested your head. It is also made with Cupron’s patented copper technology embedded in the microfibers which promote the growth of skin firming proteins. So go ahead and sleep yourself younger!

Finally, lets talk about developing a tactical plan of attack for your hair. While I’m sure some of you might think I have gone off the drama deep-end, another portion of you completely get it! There are those days that you spend valuable time styling your hair just so, only to step outside and get ambushed by weather that has a whole new (less chic) style in mind for you. Wind, rain and humidity are the biggest culprits when it comes to ruining your ‘do, but with proper planning you can fight even the worst of conditions. Nice N Easy created a hair-saver tool called the Local Hair Day Forecast. This free online tool lets you select your hair type and location, and it generates not only the weather forecast but also a tip on how to style your hair for minimal environmental input. Never again will your hair be at the mercy of Mother Nature!

So hopefully some of my favorite products will help you update your beauty routine and have a beautiful spring!

By Daddy Nickell

As a daddy to seven kids between the ages of 5 months and 27 years old, I’ve learned a thing or two – first hand – about sibling rivalry. And through that experience I’ve come to understand a few ways in which to help manage the seemingly inevitable rivalry.

Here are my top five tips to help parents with sibling rivalry:

1. Allow each child time to shine. The first rule can come into play in a variety of ways. First of all, figure out what each child is really good at and encourage that activity. Let them know how proud you are of them and how wonderful they are at whatever activity they may be interested in. Keep in mind every child will likely excel in a different endeavor, which is a good thing when helping to diminish sibling rivalry. Children need to know they’re successful and have their very own, special niche. Secondly, make special time to spend alone with each of your children. For instance, you might have one child who is high-energy and likes to talk – a lot, and another who tends to be more quiet and reflective; you don’t want these two to constantly be competing for your attention. Make sure you set aside special times to share individually with each of your children. This special time will allow them to feel like they have your attention and will eliminate some need for sibling rivalry.

2. Be equal, just and fair. As a parent this is always a difficult task to accomplish. Most of us know by now that life, in general, isn’t fair. What I’m talking about here, however, is to practice fairness and equality in the way in which you treat your children. If they’re all on the same playing field they’ll be less likely to be battling one another because, let’s face it, they’ll be on the same team. At times, bending the rules may be easier but, when you’re a parent to multiple children bending the rules for one will lead to sibling rivalry as one child will feel like they got the short end of the stick. When in doubt, just be fair and treat all of your children with love and respect.

3. Don’t make comparisons. Comparisons lead to competition, which will lead to sibling rivalry – bottom line. Never say, “Why can’t you be more like your brother?” Remember that every child is an individual with unique thoughts, talents and emotions. And every child is incredible. Instead of making comparisons, try using positive reinforcements and pointing out what things each child does individually very well. This strategy will allow for less sibling rivalry.

4. Explore feelings and share openly. Those of you who often read my blogs and articles know I’m a firm believer in speaking openly and honestly with your children. It’s not always the easiest thing to do, but giving children the opportunity to feel it’s okay to share their emotions openly is huge – on multiple levels. You’ll likely be shocked by the things they tell you, and it will probably be eye-opening as well. Sharing feelings and emotions, together as a family, will enable your children to care for one another and be more empathetic to others, too. If you can get your children to see the bigger picture through feelings and emotions they’ll be less likely to have the need to compete via sibling rivalry.

5. Lead by example. Remember as a dad you have big shoes to fill. Your children are ALWAYS watching you and learning from you, too. So it’s important to lead by example. Don’t be jealous of other people; be proud of the things you have and focus on the positive. A little competition can be beneficial, sure, as it can push you to try harder and do better, but there’s no need to teach your children to be over-competitive; instead it’s important to share with them that they can’t win at everything and there’s always something to be gained when we “lose.” Be the best dad you can be, and show your children ways in which they can solve they’re problems before they lead to sibling rivalry!

I’ve had success with these five tips – or rules, if you will – in the past, and I hope you’ll share the same success by utilizing them now and in the future.

Happy parenting!

Sincerely,

Daddy Nickell

In celebration of moms everywhere, let’s take a look at Hollywood’s newest matriarchs who will celebrate their first Mother’s Day on May 12.
Giuliana Rancic:

Reality stars Giuliana Rancic and Bill Rancic welcomed their first child, son Duke, on August 30. The new mom opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her big plans to celebrate her first Mother’s Day.

“Bill and I are having our moms come to LA for Mother’s Day – to make it special for all of us,” she shared. “We’re planning a fancy bunch with the whole family at a nice hotel in Newport Coast and then a walk on the beach. Reall, I just want to relax and enjoy the day together as a whole family.”

She added: “This Mother’s Day is especially meaningful because it’s my first time to celebrate as a mother, of course! After struggling for years to have a baby, it’s a real gift to be able to spend the special day with Bill, Duke and our family.”

Holly Madison:

Before welcoming her first child, daughter Rainbow, on March 5, Playboy model Holly Madison spoke to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her hopes for her first Mother’s Day.

“I hope my boyfriend [Pasquale Rotella] and I can find something fun to do that someone only a few months old will enjoy,” Holly shared. “Maybe we will take her to the Springs Preserve (a park here in Vegas) and see if she reacts to any of the animals and the nature.”

Kristin Cavallari:

The Hills alum Kristin Cavallari, 26, welcomed her first child, son Camden, on August 8.

Engaged to Camden’s dad, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, Kristin recently chatted about the joys of motherhood.

“Motherhood came very naturally to me. I’m enjoying every second. He’s such a happy, sweet baby.
“I will hopefully spend Mother’s Day in sweatpants, on the couch, and with my two boys making me breakfast and letting me control the remote control,” joked the actress. “I think that would be fantastic, and I’m lucky that my husband and son also enjoy those days where we don’t have to do too much.”

She added: “I think it’s too much pressure. As someone who used to wait tables, the idea of brunch on Mother’s Day is too much pressure. I would rather have breakfast at home in sweatpants and hang out all day. To me, Mother’s Day is a day where you can wear sweatpants and not feel bad about it.”

Jewel:

Singer-songwriter Jewel is mom to 1 1/2-year-old son Kase.
“Gosh, I have no plans yet. I just realized it’s coming up so soon,” she shared. “In regard to what Mother’s Day means to me, my mom left me when I was 8-years-0ld so I never really celebrated it. As a kid, I remember giving my dad a card on Mother’s Day because he was pulling double duty.”

“Now that I’m a mom, Mother’s Day has taken on a new meaning,” she added. “It’s really sweet and I look forward to celebrating more Mother’s Days as my son gets older. I haven’t really gotten any Mother’s Day gifts yet, but when the baby was really little my husband gave me my first Mother’s Day card that was really special.”

Phaedra Parks:

Reality star Phaedra Parks is mom 2-year-old son Ayden. The Real Housewives of Atlanta star told us that she is due to give birth to her second child right around Mother’s Day.

“I need my day off for myself,” she shared. “[My husband] better have his plans ready, because that’s one day he’ll be on the hot seat [laughs].”

“I think every day should be Mother’s Day, because moms do so much,” she added. “For moms, I think Mother’s Day is the one day you should be able to do whatever you like. It is such an honor to have a living mother, and you should have that day to celebrate her. My mom and I are very close and she’s pretty much already told me what she wants for Mother’s Day. I will hopefully celebrate with her during that weekend. It will be right around the time my son is due, so I’m sure I wont be doing too much because I will be ready to pop [laughs].”

Gena Lee Nolin:

Baywatch alum Gena Lee Nolin is mom to four children: Spencer, 16, Caia, 11, Hudson, 6, and Stella, 4. The actress is leaving Mother’s Day plans up to her hubby and kids.

“I kind of leave Mother’s Day up to my husband and the kids,” Gena Lee shared. “They’re always like, “Okay, we are going to do brunch and do this and do that, flowers and gifts.” However, you know what? I just want to be with my family.”

“Last year we went (and I’m sure a lot of people will get a kick out of this) to the local IHOP,” she continued. “It was one of the best Mother’s Days I’ve ever had. My daughter picked it and I was like, “This is awesome!” Everyone had the fancy pancakes with the whipped cream and strawberries and I am gluten free so I had eggs, but it was the best. I think as a mother, Mother’s Day is just about being with your family, just being with your kids. I could care less what we do as long as we’re together.”

She added: “I have so much respect for my mother and my grandmother, and Mother’s Day is just a day of really reflecting on the mothers in our lives. Mother’s Day is everything; Mother Earth, being a mother to your children, our mothers, our grandmothers. It is a very important day to really appreciate these women in our lives. I am lucky to have my children do the same for me.”

One thing for sure, she’s hoping for some hand-made gifts from her sweet kids.

“In regard to awesome Mother’s Day gifts I’ve received, the homemade ones are the best,” she continued. “However, there was a necklace that my husband gave me that contained all of my children’s initials. That was probably the most sentimental gift I ever got. I love getting my kids’ homemade cards that they make. My husband is really good about saying, “Instead of buying mommy a card, let’s see what we can make her.” Even my oldest will make me a card. Keepers!”

Kelly Bensimon:

Reality star Kelly Bensimon is a single mom to daughters Sea, 14, and Thadeus, 12. The Real Housewives of New York alum is looking forward to her Mother’s Day plans.

“I just love Mother’s Day because I love to be with my kids,” Kelly said. “Last year I had brunch with my kids and my best friend who is also my hairdresser. I love Mother’s Day because it is an opportunity for me to be with my kids and not have to parent them. I’m like, “It’s Mother’s Day, so I don’t have to parent you and it’s all about fun!” It’s actually a day where I get to celebrate being their mother. That’s really exciting for me.”

She added: “For me, I have two kids and I’m a single parent. Therefore, Mother’s Day is an opportunity for me to tell my kids, “It’s a day for us to celebrate being together.” Instead of celebrating me, I want to celebrate them. They are the greatest luxury that I could ever even imagine having. I can’t believe that I am the mother of two gorgeous girls. It’s something that I respect a lot and I want to celebrate it with them. It’s not about me; it is about us.”

Tori Spelling:

Reality star Tori Spelling is mom to four kids: Liam, 6, Stella, 4, Hattie, 1, and Finn, 8 months. The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about being grateful this Mother’s Day.

“For me, Mother’s Day means four amazing miracles,” Tori shared. “I have a lot to celebrate this Mother’s Day…an amazing, complete family. So, I am really, really blessed. I don’t know what we’re planning.”

Tori’s husband Dean McDermott went on to share an example of their typical Mother’s Day celebrations.

“We usually plan brunch,” Dean said. “But, with four rug rats, maybe I’ll whip up brunch for us. Mother’s Day is all about honoring moms. I’m blessed that the mom we have gave me four, beautiful little babies. And, it’s her day, so try and spoil her.”

Julie Moran:

The Balancing Act host Julie Moran is mom to daughters Miaya, 13, and Makayla, 8. The Entertainment Tonight alum dished about getting breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day.

“Mother’s Day is a really fun day for me,” she shared. “They always bring me breakfast in bed, which I laugh about. They’ve gotten better about cleaning up the kitchen. They used to do this amazing breakfast in bed, then I would go down and look at the kitchen and be like, “Oh my gosh, I wish they hadn’t brought me breakfast in bed! The kitchen is a disaster!” Now that they are thirteen and eight, they actually clean up the kitchen afterwards, which is so cool.”

She added: “My eight-year-old is taking this card-making class and she is creating these amazing cards. We now make our cards instead of buy them. The cards my girls make for me are some of my most cherished possessions. Some of them are Christmas cards or Mother’s Day cards, and I put them in this special box that is getting very full. I save the poems that they write or the cards that they make. Mother’s Day usually consists of cards and breakfast. Sometimes my sweet husband will bring flowers home from the farmer’s market. We do celebrate Mother’s Day, but we don’t go over the top.”

She went on to say that Mother’s Day brings up her favorite memories.

“The three best days of my life were the two days that my daughters were born and the day I got married,” she said. “Those are the three happiest days of my life; nothing can top those three days ever. Mother’s Day always reminds me and brings me back to those moments in my life. When I was the happiest. Certainly I live a happy life, but nothing tops those three moments.”

She added: “In regard to my favorite Mother’s Day gifts, I have one amazing poem that my daughter wrote me called “Dear Mommy.” It was so beautiful that I had to frame it. It was amazing. My girls get allowance, and one time my daughter bought me this little china flower with her allowance money. There was also this one time that one of them bought me this little Minnie Mouse from Disneyland. They spent the money they get from making their beds and taking out the trash or clearing the table. That really meant something to me…they took their own money and spent it on me. I’m was like, “Don’t do that! You should save that for yourself.” It gets me teary when they take their own and give it away. That means a lot.”

Lisa Matassa:

Country crooner Lisa Matassa is mom to daughter Alexa, 17, and son Frank, 15.
“Every Mother’s Day we make plans to see both my Mom and my husband’s Mom at the same time,” Lisa shared. “We’ll all do brunch together and exchange little plants or flowers. Later in the day, just the four of us have dinner as a family. Being a Mom is an incredible feeling and some of my favorite Mother’s Day gifts are the ones my kids made for me when they were younger. I still have the gold plaque of my daughter’s handprint and the picture frame my son made for me in second grade.”

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor:

“Mother’s Day plans? Hardly,” Stefanie said. “Moms don’t get a break! Hopefully my kids will get me some sort of smelly lotion from Bath and Body and maybe let me have some of their Girl Scout cookies. That’s all I need. It’s just another day.”

“Just being together as a family,” she said of her ideal Mother’s Day. “Doing something fun and silly…flying a kite, going to an aquarium, just being together.”

Salli Richardson-Whitfield:

Eureka star Salli Richardson-Whitfield is mom to daughter Parker, 8, and 4-year-old son Dre.
“We always go to church on that day and brunch.” Salli said. “My daughter really likes me to be with her on that day so any spa trips have to happen on another day. The best gifts are the ones that kids make a school and getting to sleep in the morning.”

Melissa Joan Hart:

Melissa & Joey star Melissa Joan Hart is mom to three sons: Mason, 7, Brady, 4, and Tucker, 8 months. The Sabrina alum tells us her Mother’s Day plans that are “nothing too fancy.”

“We usually enjoy a relaxing day at home with a nice brunch or lunch at a quiet restaurant,” MJH shared. “Nothing too fancy, I like to have a calm day filled with love and snuggles.”

Nicole Sullivan:

Wendell & Vinnie star Nicole Sullivan is mom to sons Dash, 5, and Beckett, 3. The actress reveals how she celebrates Mother’s Day every year.

“We do the same thing every Mother’s Day,” Nicole said. “As a family, we all stay at a nice hotel in the area for one night. I get a nice four-hour block to do something relaxing like lay out or go to the spa. Last year I was asked if I wanted to make a spa appointment and I was like, “No, I’ll just lay out by the pool,” and all I did was lay in bed in the dark and listened to music. It was so relaxing and I was so happy [laughs].”

She added: “Growing up, Mother’s Day was always the one day where we were not allowed to snipe at our mother [laughs]. We had to be polite to her. Obviously, yes, it’s a hallmark holiday, but it’s fun to remind everyone that moms do a lot in the family. Whether you’re working or you’re staying at home, the mom is in charge of a majority of the stuff that goes on in the house. For one day, everyone can stop whatever they are doing and go, “Wow, that’s pretty amazing that moms can pull this off!””

The maternity fashion pioneer opens up about her Mother’s Day plans.

“I am fortunate that since I grew up in Manhattan and still live here, most of my family does too,” Liz said. “I typically spend Mother’s Day with my children, my sister and her children, and my mother. We usually go out for brunch or dinner. I enjoy any reason to spend time with family but I must admit “Mother’s Day” as a holiday doesn’t mean all that much to me.”

Happy Mother’s Day to all you hard working mamas out there!
